HAZMAT OSHA 3115 Fall Protection OSHA 5602 Update for Disaster Site Worker Trainer Twenty-one instructors from 13 IUOE Locals attended the OSHA 3115 Fall Protection class held in August at Local 841’s training site in Universal, IN. The instructors gained knowledge in the state-of-the-art technology for fall protection and current OSHA requirements. Instructors learned the principles of fall protection, the hazards of working at heights, the components of fall arrest systems, the limitations of fall arrest equipment, and OSHA policies regarding fall protection. The instructors participated in simulated fall protection exercises for a number of scenarios where various personal fall protection systems would be necessary and in a fall-related rescue exercise. OSHA 521 OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene Eleven instructors from eight IUOE Locals attended the OSHA 521 Industrial Hygiene course held in September at Local 30’s training facility in Whitestone, NY. The instructors gained knowledge that can then be applied to a number of other safety and health-related classes they teach. They learned about human systems and toxicology, permissible exposure limits, OSHA health standards, respiratory protection, hierarchy of controls, sampling and instrumentation, and many other related topics. Instructors get to understand how many of these industrial hygiene applications work through hands-on laboratories for air, noise, and heat stress sampling; fourgas monitor calibration including a bump test; choosing the correct respirator cartridge based on information given; differentiating airflow for length of piping for a confined space; evaluating indoor air quality; and using a ventilation chamber to determine appropriate ventilation rates among others. OSHA 5600 Disaster Site Worker Trainer Ten instructors from seven IUOE Locals attended the OSHA 5600 Disaster Site Worker Trainer course held in September at Local 673’s hall in Jacksonville, FL. The instructors acquired new knowledge, skills, and attitudes with regard to disaster site work and demonstrated how to properly don, doff and inspect air-purifying respirators. Guest speakers from the Jacksonville Fire Department who are with the State Urban Search & Rescue (SUSAR) unit talked about the value of their working relationship with IUOE Local 673. They also discussed the importance of having this working relationship to prepare before disasters occur, including training together and having logistics set up to contact the Operating Engineers when they are needed for rescue and recovery. This course updates the trainer with new technical and regulatory information related to disaster response. Instructors had the opportunity to share “lessons learned” and refreshed their knowledge based on various recent disaster scenarios. OSHA 2225 Respiratory Protection Eighteen instructors from 13 IUOE Locals attended the OSHA 2225 Respiratory Protection course held in October at Local 17’s training site in Lake View, NY. The instructors acquired knowledge regarding Respiratory Protection Programs, fit testing, NIOSH-certified respirators and cartridges, cartridge replacement, and numerous types of respiratory equipment. They learned the advantages and disadvantages and how to don and doff the different types of respirators. OSHA 511 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the General Industry and OSHA 501 Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the General Industry Eleven instructors from eight IUOE Locals attended the OSHA 511 standards course, and 13 instructors attended the OSHA 501 trainer course. Both classes were held in December at Local 399’s training site in Chicago, IL. The instructors gained knowledge in the OSHA general industry standards, policies and procedures, and how to use and read the 29 CFR 1910 standards during the OSHA 511. The OSHA 501 requires instructors to give an OSHA presentation with special emphasis placed on those topics that are required in the 10- and 30-hour General Industry Outreach courses as well as applicable topics that are the most hazardous to Stationary Engineers. Completion of this course allows instructors to teach the 10- and 30-hour OSHA General Industry Industry Outreach courses.
